HE TOUCHED ME
The disciples were on the Mount of Transfiguration, cowering and out of their depth with what was happening, when, “Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 17:7) He could have simply used words but He chose to touch.
We are all human, tactile creatures and often need physical touch to settle us. The disciples had seen heavenly things which unsettled them and needed that physical arm around them. When we are afraid we often shut our eyes to blot out the source of fear. Notice that when the disciples opened their eyes, Jesus filled their picture.
Many years ago, a friend of mine, whose young wife had died, shortly after the birth of their first child, told me his experience. Heartbroken and fearful for himself and his new daughter, life having crumbled into pieces; at the graveside, felt a hand on his shoulder and looked around to see who was standing with him. He saw the impression of a hand on his jacket which was holding him steady, but there was no-one there. It wasn’t a human hand, it was the touch of Jesus, who also whispered inside him, “I’m here and I will never leave you.”
We do need to have the knowledge of the Godhead as we read and know God’s Word, but we also need a tangible experience. Jesus knows just how to touch you and comfort you. You may be longing for the touch of a past loved one, which you know is an impossibility. But you can ask Jesus for His touch, His hug, His presence, His re-assurance, His hand to bring stability, to combat fear and loneliness.
“His touch has still its ancient power.”
You may feel dead, He’ll raise you – as with Jairus’ daughter in Luke 8:54
You may be sick, He’ll heal you – as with Peter’s mother in law in Mark 1:31
You may feel leprous and unclean, He’ll cleanse you and receive you – as with the leper in Luke 5:13
All who touched Him, and consequently were touched by Him, were healed – read Matthew 14:36
